Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) causes 10% to 15% of first-ever strokes,
resulting in high rates of morbidity and mortality. The American Heart
Association (AHA) originally published guidelines for the management of
spontaneous ICH in 1999. Since that time, 16 pilot and larger randomized
medical and surgical trials for ICH/intraventricular hemorrhage have been
published. In June of 2007, the AHA and the American Stroke Association
(ASA) published an update to the guidelines. This program focuses on the new 2007 AHA/ASA Guidelines for the
Management of Spontaneous Intracerebral Hemorrhage in Adults.
Presented by an expert in ICH, this activity details the new
evidence-based guidelines for the diagnosis and management of ICH,
including new recommendations for initial diagnostic evaluations and brain
imaging, blood pressure and seizure management, reversing
anticoagulation and warfarin, reducing hematoma expansion, management
of elevated ICP, restarting anticoagulation, surgical technique and timing,
and other issues in medical management. The presentation discusses
recent findings from medical and surgical trials, providing stroke team
members with evidence-based medicine that they can apply in the
treatment of patients.
